The attached chart shows how bargaining works under the Railway Labor Act (RLA). The process prescribed by law for railroads and unions like ours is much different than what is experienced by unions under the National Labor Relations Act. The entire process is designed to avoid disruptions to commerce (whether by strikes or lockouts).
It is vital that each of our members understands how bargaining works for our union. Take time to read and explore this chart, and be sure to ask for help if you're unsure of any particular step of component.
At the time this article is posted (April 2020) we are under Direct Negotiations with the NCCC (the National Carriers' Conference Committee, an organized coalition of railroads that work together on the other side of the bargaining table from us and our sister unions).
For this round of bargaining, we are bargaining in a coalition with SMART-Mechanical. The other railroad unions are bargaining as a coalition called the Coordinated Bargaining Group. This coalition includes the BLET-IBT, SMART-TD, BRS, IBB, NCFO(SEIU), ATDA, IAM, TCU, IBEW, & TWU.
